Your Interview Process Is Driving Away Your Best IT Candidates

Picture this: a software engineer applies to your open role. She is exactly what you wanted. Strong technical background, relevant certifications, collaborative personality. She makes it through a phone screen, completes a coding assessment, and gets invited back for a panel interview. Then she waits ten days to hear anything. By the time your team sends an email, she has already accepted an offer somewhere else. Sound familiar? The data on what is happening to IT candidates during the hiring process is uncomfortable reading for most companies.

The Numbers Don't Lie: Long Processes Are Losing You Talent

A 2026 analysis from RecruitBPM found that offer acceptance rates have dropped to just 51% in recent quarters, down from 74% two years ago. That is nearly a one-in-three decline in the rate at which companies are successfully closing candidates they have already decided to hire. The most common culprits are slow scheduling (42% of candidates cite it as a reason they drop out) and a persistent lack of communication. A full 61% of candidates report never receiving any status update or formal rejection after applying for a role.

Even companies that know their process is too long often struggle to fix it. 52% of hiring teams admit their interview process is still too lengthy, even after deliberate attempts to streamline. The average time-to-hire across industries now sits between 41 and 44 days. For specialized IT roles, that window often stretches significantly longer. Every day that passes is a day your candidate is fielding calls from your competitors.

What Candidates Actually Experience

The candidate experience matters more than most companies realize, and not just because it affects whether someone accepts your offer. Poor communication during a search damages your employer brand in ways that take years to repair. RecruitBPM research found that 72% of candidates experienced negative effects from long hiring processes and poor communication, and only 5.5% of rejected candidates received useful feedback even though 94% said they wanted it. And 41% of employers are reporting more candidate ghosting than two years ago. When candidates disappear mid-process, it is not always because they are flaky. Sometimes it is because the experience already told them everything they needed to know.

The IT Hiring Process: Where Most Companies Go Wrong

IT hiring has its own specific friction points. The first is interview overload: multiple rounds of take-home coding tests, whiteboard exercises, and panel reviews add weeks without necessarily producing better results. The second is approval chains that were not prepared in advance. Many companies still require multiple sign-offs before an offer can even be drafted, which adds days after the decision is already made. The third is ghosting at the finish line. Candidates who complete four rounds of interviews and then hear nothing for two weeks are not going to be enthusiastic when you finally call.

What You Can Do Right Now

  • Commit to a 48-hour maximum for scheduling the next step after each interview stage. Candidates read slow scheduling as low interest

  • Set a firm limit on interview rounds: 2 to 3 is the standard for most IT roles

  • Brief every interviewer before a panel so candidates are not answering the same questions four times

  • Send a status update within 3 business days of every interview stage, even if it is just to say your team is still evaluating

  • Pre-approve your offer range before interviewing starts so you can move within 24 hours of a final decision

Your interview process is your first real signal to a candidate about what it would be like to work at your company. If it is slow, disorganized, or silent, top IT professionals will draw their own conclusions, and they will be right. At High Sierra Talent, we help companies audit and tighten their hiring processes so the best candidates stay engaged all the way to the offer. Ready to stop losing great people to your own timeline?
